Roads you will drive at Tallaght
Routes head out along the N81, through Tallaght Village, and into the residential estates off Old Bawn Road and Belgard Road. The tester will want to see how you handle multi-lane roundabouts, bus lanes, and the mix of dual carriageways and tight estate roads.

Tricky spots at Tallaght
South Dublin roads are a proper mix. You have the wide dual carriageways of Belgard Road and the N81, tight residential estates in Kilnamanagh and Aylesbury, and the busy retail traffic around The Square. Expect bus lanes, cycle lanes, and plenty of roundabouts.
Multi-lane roundabout with heavy traffic flow. Lane selection is critical. Pick the wrong lane and you end up heading for the M50.
People forget to check mirrors before changing lanes. The bus lane catches learners who drift into it.
Parked cars on both sides narrow the road. You need to show proper progress while watching for kids and pedestrians.
HGVs pulling out from units. Tight turns with poor visibility at some junctions.
Tips for passing at Tallaght
What you need to know
From 9 March 2026, you must show a valid motor insurance certificate for the vehicle you are using for the test. If your name is not on the certificate, bring an email or letter from your insurer confirming you are covered. No certificate, no test.
The driving test costs €85 for cars, motorcycles, and work vehicles. Apply online at MyRoadSafety on rsa.ie. You need a debit or credit card and a valid email.
- Complete all 12 EDT lessons with an RSA Approved Driving Instructor
- Hold your learner permit for at least 6 months
- Have a vehicle with valid tax, insurance, NCT (if applicable), L plates, and an extra rear-view mirror for the examiner
You will be assessed on:
At your vehicle, the examiner will ask you to demonstrate checks on: tyres, lights, reflectors, indicators, oil level, coolant, steering, windscreen washer fluid, and brakes. You may need to open the bonnet and close it securely.
Give at least 10 days notice to cancel and get a refund of your €85 fee. Cancel online through rsa.ie.
