Kilmainham is where you get real-world skills

Old Kilmainham is tight and busy with traffic heading to and from Heuston Station. South Circular Road carries constant through-traffic and the junctions are relentless. Bow Lane is narrow and hemmed in by parked cars. The whole area funnels traffic between the quays and the south city, and learning to drive here means learning to be decisive.

Nearby Test Centre

L1-2: Controls and Positioning

The IMMA car park at the Royal Hospital is where first lessons often begin. It is spacious, calm, and free. Controls, gear changes, and basic positioning in a low-pressure environment before any public road work begins.

L3-4: Direction Changes and Speed

James's Walk runs from Heuston Station past the Royal Hospital with a gentle descent towards Islandbridge. Lessons 3 and 4 use this road for controlled speed changes, signalling practice, and reading the descending camber of the road.

L5-6: Complex Positioning and Hazards

Bow Lane West is the narrow lane behind Kilmainham Gaol. High walls, tight corners, and barely enough room for two cars to pass. Lessons 5 and 6 work on precise positioning and the ability to stop, reverse, and yield in confined spaces.

L7-8: Sharing the Road and Traffic

Old Kilmainham Road is where lessons 7 and 8 take place. Tour coaches, taxis, pedestrians crossing mid-road, and parked cars reducing the road to single file. Sharing the road here means constant observation and patience.

L9-10: Complex Junctions and Speed

The South Circular Road junction at Old Kilmainham has multiple lanes, overhead filter arrows, and heavy traffic. Lessons 9 and 10 target this junction specifically. You will have driven it enough times to read the signs, pick your lane, and commit without hesitation.

L11-12: Calm Driving and Night Conditions

Emmet Road at night carries hospital shift traffic and taxis. Lessons 11 and 12 cover low-light conditions and keeping composure when the road around you is busy and poorly lit. Final polish before the Rathgar Test Centre routes.

Driving lessons in Kilmainham, between the gaol and the South Circular

Old Kilmainham Road runs from Kilmainham Gaol towards Inchicore. It is not wide and there are cars parked on both sides. Tour coaches stop and pull out with little notice. Pedestrians cross to the gaol at odd angles. Your instructor picks you up at the IMMA car park or Kilmainham Gaol car park and your first few lessons deal with exactly this kind of unpredictable traffic.

South Circular Road is the step up. Heavy traffic, bus lanes, and filter arrows at the junctions. You need to be reading the road 100 metres ahead to pick your lane in time. Emmet Road connecting to Inchicore adds hospital traffic from St. James's to the mix.

Bow Lane West is the quieter alternative. Narrow, high-walled, barely room for two cars. Useful for building spatial awareness and low-speed precision before facing the SCR.

Heuston Station has a pick-up point on the Luas Red Line concourse. The roads around it are packed during train arrivals. Taxis, private cars, and buses all competing for space.

Manual lessons are €53.27 single or €49 per lesson in the 12-lesson EDT pack (€587.95 total). Six lessons cost €52.50 each. Automatic is €61.41 single, €54.94 per lesson for 12 (€659.24 EDT). Pretest with car hire is €183.63 manual, €193.81 automatic. Female instructors available. Your test will be at Rathgar Test Centre, about 12 minutes away.

Feedback from drivers who trained on Old Kilmainham Road

★★★★★
Ruth Jedidja Stael
Ruth took driving lessons with RSA School of Motoring. I’ve had a very positive experience with RSA. Derek is a great driving instructor! My confidence in driving was low after a few negative experiences with other driving instructors but Derek, who is relaxed, informative and extremely patient, helped me pass my test on my first attempt (Tallaght Test centre)! I can’t recommend him enough! I did my lessons in the rathmines/ranelagh area.

Laura
Laura trained with Jonathan. I am taking driving lessons in Rathmines with Jonathan Martínez and I am very happy with him. He is very patient and always with a smile and he gives lots of tips on how to improve. He gives excellent feedback and corrects mistakes in a very professional and supportive way. I appreciate how he also makes positive contributions on what you are doing well, which motivates me. I was scared of driving and with Jonathan I feel safe and in good hands. Very professional, motivated and supportive instructor!

Eimear Bee
I completed my lessons with Richard around the Cabra area in Dublin. He was recommended to me by my partner who passed his driving test the first time with Richard's help! I can't recommend Richard enough. He is thorough, easy to deal with & such a great teacher. I had absolutely no idea about cars and had never driven before. He explains things in a simple, pragmatic way & gave me the confidence I didn't know I had, especially while driving in Dublin city.
