Your 12 EDT Lessons Explained, One by One
Everything you need to know about Essential Driver Training in Dublin. What each lesson covers, what it costs, and how to get started.
What is EDT?
EDT is a 12-lesson course set by the RSA. Every learner permit holder in Ireland must complete it before sitting the driving test. No exceptions.
Why it exists
Ireland introduced EDT in 2011 to cut road deaths among new drivers. Each lesson builds a specific skill. The structure is the same for every learner, everywhere in the country.
Who needs it
Anyone with a first-time Irish learner permit. If you hold a recognised foreign licence, you may only need 6 lessons. Check the RSA website for the reduced EDT list.
ADI requirement
EDT lessons must be delivered by an RSA-approved driving instructor (ADI). Every lesson is logged on the RSA system. Your instructor signs off each one digitally.
Your 12 EDT Lessons
Each lesson has a specific focus. Here is what you will actually cover, and why it matters on Dublin roads. Lessons 1 to 8 must be completed in order. Lessons 9 to 12 can be taken in any order.
Pick the package that suits you
All prices include car for the lesson, pickup from your home or a nearby meeting point, and digital EDT logbook updates.
