Goatstown is where test prep starts

Goatstown Road has a deceptive layout. It feels residential but carries fast through-traffic between Dundrum and Stillorgan. Taney Road is narrow with sharp bends and parked cars that force constant lane adjustment. Lower Kilmacud Road feeds into busier junctions where you need quick decisions.

Nearby Test Centre

Dun Laoghaire/Deansgrange, 5km away (12 mins). Often includes Goatstown routes in test itinerary.

12 EDT lessons on Goatstown roads

Start on residential streets, build to Goatstown Road and Taney Road. That is how EDT works in Goatstown.

1 2

L1-2: Controls and Positioning

Friarsland Road runs east towards Stillorgan and stays quiet during off-peak hours. You learn clutch control, gear changes, and how to position the car correctly before tackling anything more complex. Proper habits start here.

L3-4: Direction and Speed

Lower Kilmacud Road has long straight sections with clear sightlines. You work on maintaining appropriate speed, turning left and right into junctions off the main road, and reading the different speed limits between residential and commercial sections.

L5-6: Complex Positioning and Hazards

Roebuck Road runs north towards Clonskeagh with parked cars on alternating sides. The weaving pattern demands active mirror use and fine-grain positioning. Cyclists also use this road regularly, so awareness of vulnerable road users gets built in early.

L7-8: Sharing the Road and Traffic

Goatstown Road carries through-traffic at speeds that catch new drivers off guard. You learn to manage faster vehicles behind you, hold your position without drifting, and handle the approach to the village crossroads where four directions converge without traffic lights.

L9-10: Complex Junctions and Speed

Taney Road's narrow stretches and school zone near Our Lady of Good Counsel teach you to reduce speed appropriately, anticipate pedestrian crossings, and handle the right turn from Taney Road onto Dundrum Road where sightlines are limited.

L11-12: Calm and Night Driving

The final lessons cover the routes to Dun Laoghaire and Rathgar test centres. Night driving on Goatstown Road requires reading of parked car hazards in reduced visibility. You finish having driven both test centre approaches multiple times.

Driving lessons in Goatstown from the village crossroads to the Dun Laoghaire test

Goatstown Road is a rat run between Dundrum and Stillorgan. It looks residential but carries faster traffic than most new drivers expect. Your instructor uses Friarsland Road and the quieter estates first, then moves you to the crossroads and main roads once your fundamentals are solid. Pickup points include Goatstown Village crossroads, the bus stop on Goatstown Road, or Taney Parish Centre.

Taney Road is tighter than it looks. Parked cars on both sides near Our Lady of Good Counsel School reduce the usable width, and school drop-off times bring extra pedestrian movement and double parking. You will spend time here in lessons because it mirrors test conditions closely.

Manual lessons are €53.27 single, €49 per lesson on the 12-pack (€587.95 total), or €52.50 per lesson on a 6-pack. Automatic is €61.41 single or €54.94 per lesson for the 12-pack. Automatic EDT is €659.24. Pretest with car hire is €183.63 manual or €193.81 automatic.

Female instructors are available. Dun Laoghaire/Deansgrange Test Centre is 12 minutes away, and test routes run through D14 regularly.

South Dublin learners on their RSA experience

Kel
I just past my test in Churchtown and I give full credit to RSA school of motoring and in particular Aidan Brereton (and his red dot!!) I am an extremely nervous driver who has failed 2 previous tests. I have taken lessons from other schools of motoring but RSA were by far the easiest to deal with, from talking to James on the phone to the instructors. I had 2 pre tests the two days leading up to my test. Thanks to Aidan the day before the test, I was able to focus better and to control my nerves (and not focus on any mistakes leading me to make more). Both instructors (James Dowling and Aidan) had a great attitude towards the testers which i have found other instructors have not. They got it into my head to do my best and that the testers were in fact not just out to fail me!!

Mary took driving lessons with RSA School of Motoring. I'm very grateful to my driving instructor, Jonathan, who gives lessons in South Dublin, including the Dundrum area. He is an excellent instructor, super professional, highly experienced and very patient. He focuses on success and has covered all aspects of driving needed to pass my test. RSA School of Motoring has an excellent website for booking and reebooking lessons. The support team are very good. I highly recommend this school and especially this instructor.

I had an excellent experience with my driving instructor Derek from Clondalkin, ADI 38295, at the beginning of May, this year. I had taken lessons previously with another instructor, but had failed to passed the test. On my second attempt, I opted for two lessons the week of my test, one of them on the day, right before the test itself. I was successful, and passed my test! Part of my success was due to Derek and his style of teaching. He was friendly, relaxed, informative and thorough.

Marcela Keane
Marcela took driving lessons with RSA School of Motoring. I just passed my driving test and couldn’t have done it without Shane! He’s an excellent instructor, patient, clear, and always supportive. Thanks to his guidance and encouragement, I not only passed my test but also feel genuinely confident and prepared to drive on my own. I’m so grateful to have had Shane as my instructor and would highly recommend him to anyone learning to drive!
