EDT lessons built for Howth hill driving
From Balscadden Road gradients to the Summit Road bends. Every EDT lesson maps to the roads around Howth.
L1-2: Controls and Positioning
Lessons start on the residential roads off Howth Road, away from the harbour traffic. You get used to the pedals, mirror checks, and clutch biting point on level ground before any hills. Positioning close to the kerb is introduced from the first lesson.
Learn about EDTL3-4: Direction Changes and Speed
Thormanby Road is used for direction work in lessons three and four. The gradient and parked cars along this residential road mean speed control is always on the agenda. Left and right turns at junctions with limited sightlines are covered here.
EDT detailsL5-6: Complex Positioning on Balscadden Road
Balscadden Road is steep, narrow, and bends twice before it reaches the top. Your instructor takes you here for lessons five and six to drill hill starts, downhill braking, and tight positioning on a road with no room for error.
Test preparationL7-8: Sharing Road Space at the Harbour
Harbour Road brings in the most complex sharing-the-road conditions in Howth. Pedestrians, cyclists, delivery vehicles, and tourist coaches all compete for limited space. You learn to anticipate and yield without hesitating.
Test preparationL9-10: Summit Road and Speed Awareness
Summit Road is the most demanding road in the area. Single-lane sections, passing places, and long bends with no visibility ahead. By lesson ten you are reading the road far enough ahead to be in the right position before problems arrive.
View optionsL11-12: Night Driving and Calm Handling
Howth Road at night is narrower than it looks in daylight. Headlights from oncoming cars hit the stone walls and bounce. You drive the Howth Road to Sutton corridor, calm and composed, the same route the Raheny test examiner will take you on.

Balscadden Road is one of the first roads you tackle in Howth, and it tests hill starts from lesson two. The gradient is steep, the bends are tight, and there is no room for rolling back. Your instructor walks you through handbrake starts until they are automatic.
Harbour Road is a different challenge. Delivery vans for the seafood restaurants park where they like, pedestrians walk in the road, and the width catches learners out. You learn to slow right down and anticipate movement from every doorway.
Summit Road comes later in your EDT programme. Single lane in parts, passing places every few hundred metres, and long drops to one side. Your instructor coaches you on when to hold your line and when to pull in for oncoming traffic.
Pickup is at Howth DART Station, the harbour car park, or the Howth Castle gates. Female instructors are available. Your test is at Raheny Test Centre, 18 minutes back along Howth Road through Sutton.
