What to Expect on Test Day
The full walkthrough. Documents, timeline, common traps, and what happens after.
Before, During, After
Here is exactly what happens, from the night before to the moment you get your result.
Get ready the night before
- Check all your documents (learner permit, insurance cert, booking confirmation)
- Verify the car: L-plates on front and rear, NCT disc valid, tax disc valid, insurance cert in the car
- Arrive at the test centre 30 minutes early
- Bring glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving
- Make sure lights, tyres, wipers, and mirrors are all working
What happens at the centre
- The examiner checks your documents and the car first
- You answer 2 to 3 technical questions about car controls (e.g. how to check the oil, where the demister is)
- You drive a set route for 30 to 40 minutes, roughly 5 miles
- The examiner marks you on observation, positioning, progress, mirrors, and reaction to hazards
- Stay calm. Drive normally. Exaggerate your mirror checks so the tester sees them.
Getting your result
- The examiner gives you a report sheet with every fault listed
- If you pass: apply for your full licence at your nearest NDLS centre
- If you fail: rebook through the RSA website. Typical wait is 6 to 8 weeks.
- Focus on the specific faults marked on your sheet. Book a pretest lesson to fix them.
Your Checklist
People get turned away on test day for missing documents. Do not let that happen.
Top Reasons for Failing
These four faults account for most failures in Dublin. Know them. Avoid them.
Observation at junctions
Not checking mirrors and blind spots before turning. The number one fault. Look right, look left, look right again. Make sure the tester sees your head move.
Mirror use
Forgetting mirrors before signalling, changing lanes, or pulling away. Every time you change speed or direction, check the mirror first.
Progress and hesitancy
Driving too slowly, not committing at roundabouts, holding up traffic. If it is safe to go, go. Hesitation gets marked.
Positioning
Too far left, too far right, or drifting on bends. Stay in your lane. On roundabouts, pick the right lane early and stick to it.
Pass Rates Vary by Centre
Rural centres tend to have higher pass rates. In Dublin, it varies. Tallaght and Finglas are busier and tougher. Dun Laoghaire tends to score higher. These are approximate figures based on RSA data.
| Test Centre | Approx. Pass Rate | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Tallaght | ~52% | View centre |
| Finglas | ~49% | View centre |
| Raheny | ~53% | View centre |
| Dun Laoghaire | ~58% | View centre |
From Learners Who Passed
Real advice from people who have been through it.
Night before
Get your documents ready. Check the car. Set two alarms. Lay everything out so you are not scrambling in the morning.
Morning of
Eat breakfast. Drive to the centre early so you are not rushed. Sit in the car park for ten minutes and settle your nerves.
During the test
Exaggerate your mirror checks. The tester needs to see your head move. If you glance with your eyes only, it will not get marked.
If you fail
It is not the end. Half of all learners fail first time. Read the fault sheet, book a pretest lesson, and go again.
Test Day FAQ
Your original learner permit, your original insurance certificate (new for 2026, digital copies no longer accepted), your booking confirmation email, and glasses or contact lenses if you use them.
About 40 minutes of driving. Total time including paperwork, technical questions, and the result is about an hour.
Observation at junctions, mirror checks, and progress or hesitancy. These three account for the majority of faults. A pretest lesson will help you focus on each one.
Yes. Most learners do. The car must have L-plates, valid NCT, tax, and insurance. We offer a pretest + car hire bundle so you can use our dual-control car on test day.
You get a detailed fault report showing exactly what went wrong. Rebook on the RSA website (typical wait is 6 to 8 weeks) and focus on the marked areas. A follow-up pretest lesson is the fastest way to fix those faults.
Up to 9 Grade 2 faults. Any single Grade 3 fault is an automatic fail. Your fault report will show the grade for each marking area.
