Driving in Harold's Cross teaches you the hard stuff

Harold's Cross Road carries non-stop commuter traffic between Rathmines and Terenure. Clanbrassil Street funnels southbound city traffic into a narrow corridor. Greenmount Lane has one-way sections that confuse new drivers. The canal crossings at Harold's Cross Bridge add another layer of junction complexity. This is inner south Dublin at its busiest.

L1-2: Controls and Positioning

First lessons start on the quieter end of Kenilworth Road, away from the school traffic. You get comfortable with the pedals, mirrors, and seat position before anything else. Observation routines are set from lesson one.

L3-4: Direction and Speed

Kenilworth Road introduces speed management with parked cars forcing constant adjustments. You practise turning left and right at the side streets feeding off Harold's Cross Road. Signal timing and road position are drilled here.

L5-6: Positioning at Complex Junctions

The Harold's Cross Bridge junction is the big one. Canal, Clanbrassil Street, and Harold's Cross Road all converge with multiple signal phases. You approach it slowly at first and build confidence over two lessons until it is routine.

L7-8: Sharing the Road

Clanbrassil Street is where you learn to share space with cyclists, buses, and delivery vans. Bus lanes switch active status throughout the day. Your instructor teaches you to read the signs, not guess.

L9-10: Speed and Complex Junctions

Greenmount Lane and its junction with Harold's Cross Road tests everything you have learned. Poor sightlines, industrial traffic, and tight width all at once. You also cover the South Circular Road connection via Clanbrassil Street at speed.

L11-12: Night Driving and Calmness

Harold's Cross Road at dusk is a different road. Headlights, pedestrians heading to the canal path, and buses stopping every 200 metres. You drive it calm and in control, ready for the Tallaght test centre run.

Driving lessons in Harold's Cross on the roads you'll actually drive

Harold's Cross Road carries commuter traffic from early morning, and that is where your lessons begin. Bus lanes are active at peak hours, camera-enforced, and the flow towards Rathmines is relentless. Your instructor picks you up at Harold's Cross Park or the bus stop on Harold's Cross Road.

Clanbrassil Street adds another dimension. Narrow, fast, with parked cars and buses competing for the same lane. You will learn to hold your position and read the road ahead, not just the car in front.

Greenmount Lane runs behind the main road and connects through to Kimmage. Industrial vans use it constantly. Sightlines at the junction with Harold's Cross Road are poor, so you practise approach speed and observation early.

Kenilworth Road is where patience comes in. Parked cars on both sides leave one lane for two-way traffic. You learn the give-and-take rhythm that gets you through tight residential streets without drama.

Female instructors are available on request. Your test will be at Tallaght Test Centre, 20 minutes south. Manual lessons from €53.27, or €49 per lesson on the 12-pack. EDT 12 lessons €587.95. Automatic from €61.41.

I passed my driving test in Tallaght first time, all thanks to Jonathan’s brilliant instruction. From the very beginning he made the learning process clear and stress-free, even though I started out with very little confidence. His explanations were always clear and practical. Every lesson felt productive and I could see my progress building after each lesson. Having completed all 12 EDT lessons with him, I can honestly say Jon is an exceptional instructor who genuinely cares about his students’ success. Thanks again Jon, couldn’t have done it without you 😊.

My driving instructor was Andrew O Shea, he is very good, patient, and makes you comfortable throughout the lessons and tries as much as he can to calm you down while going into the test, I even wanted to give up, but he pushed me, believed in me more than I believed in my self, I passed my test in Tallaght , where I also did my lessons. If you want to pass your test , I highly recommend him, He is the one, get in touch with him, I tell you, you won’t regret it!!!!

Paul took driving lessons with RSA School of Motoring. Did my lessons and passed my test in Tallaght with Derek as my instructor. Couldn’t have asked for a nicer, more patient man than Derek. Always kept me at ease, and was always excellent at explaining where I went wrong and how I can improve my driving skills. An absolute gentleman and I would absolutely recommend him to anyone. Thank you Derek, I would have been hopeless without you!
