What About Code 78?
If you pass in an automatic, your Category B licence gets a Code 78 restriction. Here is what that actually means in practice.
What it means
Pass your driving test in an automatic and your NDLS licence is stamped Code 78. That means you can only drive automatic cars. It is printed right on your full licence.
Does it matter?
Three in four new cars sold in Ireland are automatic. Every electric vehicle is automatic. The number of manual-only cars on Irish roads shrinks every year. For most drivers, Code 78 changes nothing.
Changed your mind?
You can remove Code 78 any time. Sit the driving test again in a manual car and the restriction comes off. No extra lessons are required, just the test fee and a manual car on the day.

Automatic lessons across Dublin
